APRIL 2022
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1
I continue to pray for the Ukrainian people, the refugees, the ones lending their homes, their food, their efforts. We are heartened by the news of a little girl singing “Let it Go” from Frozen, her lovely clear voice calming people and giving them strength. We can be like her…sometimes it is just the little things where we can help others. “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can,” from Arthur Ashe. Be the light in someone’s life and in doing this you show your faith.
MARCH 2022
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1: 1-5 NIV
In these dark days when we find it hard to read the news about the Ukraine, Afghanistan, North Korea…it is hard for us to believe that the light shines in the darkness. But it is up to us to foster that light. I heard a terrific motto from Brenda Leigh Johnson, “Be kind, Find the Joy, Be the light in someone’s life.” This is what we must do when we are overwhelmed by it all. What can we do in our lives, what can we contribute in word, deed and action? May we hold onto our faith and shine the light for others to see.
FEBRUARY 2022
Let your light so shine!
“No one lights a lamp and hides it under a bowl or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in will see the light.” Luke 8:16 ISV.
This verse took on new meaning to me while reading and enjoying “The Book of Joy” by the Dalai Lama, the Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and their writer, Douglas Abrams. It is a book for our times. Both famous men have had their share of challenges and yet they exude joy. So many great nuggets of advice. I’ve listed a couple below.
“The more we heal our own pain, the more we can turn to the pain of others. The more we turn toward others, the more joy we experience, and the more joy we experience, the more joy we bring to others.” Dalai Lama.
“To be a reservoir of joy, an oasis of peace, a pool of serenity that can ripple out to all those around you.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu
“Joy is contagious, as is love, compassion and generosity. We cannot bring peace if we do not have inner peace.” Douglas Abrams
When I think about the quotes above with this month’s bible verse, it highlights the importance of sharing our individual light God’s instilled in each one of us. Our light is contagious and brings not only joy to others, but to ourselves. So let your light so shine! May it be so.
JANUARY 2022
The people walking in darkness
see a bright light;
light shines
on those who live in a land of deep darkness. Isaiah: 9:2 NET Bible
Last year I adopted a practice I learned from my fellow writers of choosing a word for the entire year. In 2021 I chose Trust.
‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding and He will make your path straight.’ Proverbs 3:5.
Little did I know how much I would need this word, after learning my husband’s diagnosis of bladder cancer. I leaned into this word, asking for prayers from our friends and family. We are very thankful that they found the cancer at stage 0 and after six uncomfortable treatments the cancer disappeared. He will still need more treatments to ensure it doesn’t return, we are very hopeful.
In church on Christmas eve, I heard, as if for the first time, the verse from Isaiah and chose my Light or did it choose me? Our last two years of Covid and its variants brought much darkness. This verse spoke to me of hope. See the light, be the light, shine the light, share the light, reflect the light. The words, light or shine is in the Bible with 76 verses.
My monthly messages will be with this theme. The first step is to see the Light. Hold on, just knowing the presence of God is with us even when we think he may be asleep in the boat. He will not let us drown. I pray for you to be a witness to the Light that it may be a hand in the darkness to bring you to the Light.

Women at the Well is an excellent opportunity to experience a community of women who care. Here is what Rev. Lori Burgess who leads the group recently described her thoughts about Women at the Well.
"I think about how often our world feels defeating and the issues overwhelming. But I think too about the moments that we leave our time together feeling a little bit better about the world. Often I know I leave believing in the goodness of others and believing a little more in myself to make positive change. This is the gift of WATW. As we walk our own unique paths, we find comfort in each other. We find solace in the notion that love always wins."
People are talking about speaker Tessa Afshar's conference!
Here is a short clip from Tessa at last year's retreat. Listen how effective she is in her message to us!
Also, watch a short clip where Lisa is telling a terrific little story about the Daughters of Zelophehad from the book of Numbers in the Old Testament. This changed the course of history for inheritance for women!
